Falling in love with the game.

I started playing tennis when I was about four years old. My dad got my sister and I hitting balloons with tennis rackets. And something about it stuck for both of us. My sister is also a professional player. Growing up, my inspirations on the court were Martina Navratilova, Martina Hingis and Roger Federer. I think the main attraction for all of them, other than being great players, was their competitive spirt. That’s certainly what drives me in tennis. I just love to compete.

Playing tennis gives me a greater enjoyment of life. The sport feeds the life and the reverse is also true. The ultimate aim is to win titles. That’s a fantastic confirmation of your efforts and it’s something I always aspire to. There’s a great camaraderie among everybody on the tour. The people you work with directly, those in your team and the friendships you build with other players. Travelling is a great benefit of this sport and this life, I feel very lucky for that. And to have a constant competitive challenge on top of all of that is a great extra.

My best so far.

I’ve been fortunate to have a number of highlights so far in my career. The ones that really stick out are winning the 2015 WTA Year End Finals, making the 2012 Wimbledon final and earning the world number two spot. Hopefully there’s even more to come from me in the future. That’s certainly the goal I work towards.

Day in. Day out.

My daily routine is pretty straightforward, some might say obsessive – breakfast, coffee (an important step), gym, lunch, tennis, dinner, sleep. Repeat. There’s a great Michael Jordan quote that really reflects my daily focus “Put in the work and the results will come.” That’s why I’m so focused on my daily routine. But it can get hard when you’re travelling a lot, I’m lucky to have my family and my team, who are like an extended family, to help keep me grounded while we’re on the road.

Looking to the future

I’m working hard every day on my aims of winning a Grand Slam and becoming world number one. I’ve made the Wimbledon final and I’ve been ranked world number two. So I’m close on both fronts. I just need to keep going. At this level it’s very much about focusing on both the mental and physical aspects of your game. You have to work really hard on the two if you want to progress.
